Great Ocean Road & Grampians Tour Package: A 4-Day Multi-City Victoria Itinerary from Melbourne
Meta description: Travel from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road to the 12 Apostles, then into the Grampians on a four-day multi-city Victoria tour with accommodation, meals, guides and unforgettable coastal and mountain experiences.
A Great Ocean Road and Grampians tour package is the ideal way to experience two of Victoria’s most spectacular landscapes in one carefully planned journey. Over four days, we take you from Melbourne’s creative energy to surf beaches, rainforest, limestone cliffs, shipwreck history, dramatic lookouts and the rugged peaks of Gariwerd. The Grampians.
This is not simply a longer day trip. It is a genuine multi city tour Victoria experience, designed to reduce backtracking and replace hours of self-driving with more time exploring. You will sleep close to the scenery, arrive at famous lookouts at better times of day and travel with an expert local guide who knows where wildlife appears, which viewpoints are quieter and how to make the most of changing weather.
Our Melbourne to Great Ocean Road multi day tour combines:
- Torquay, Bells Beach and the surf coast
- Lorne, Kennett River and Cape Otway
- Apollo Bay accommodation
- The 12 Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge
- Halls Gap and the Grampians National Park
- Pinnacle Lookout, Mackenzie Falls and Boroka Lookout
- Wildlife encounters at dawn and dusk
- Small-group and private charter options
Why combine the Great Ocean Road and Grampians?
Two separate day trips can show you the highlights, but they often involve long drives, early starts and returning to Melbourne between experiences. Combining both regions into one itinerary creates a smoother loop: coast first, mountains second, with no unnecessary backtracking.
You can watch the Southern Ocean change colour around the 12 Apostles in the late afternoon, after many day visitors have departed. The next morning, you can wake near the Grampians and reach the Pinnacle for sunrise, when the sandstone formations glow softly above Halls Gap.
Our private four-day itinerary is inspired by the renowned Great Southern Touring Route and our private Great Ocean Road, Grampians and Goldfields tour, with flexibility to suit your group, fitness level and travel style.
Day 1: Melbourne to Torquay, Bells Beach, Cape Otway and Apollo Bay
We collect you from your Melbourne hotel or a convenient city meeting point and begin our journey west. The first stop is Torquay, the famous gateway to the Great Ocean Road and one of Australia’s great surf towns.
At Bells Beach, powerful Southern Ocean swells roll beneath the cliffs. This is more than a beautiful viewpoint: Bells Beach is internationally famous as the traditional home of the Rip Curl Pro, one of the world’s longest-running professional surfing events. Even when the competition is not running, the atmosphere is unmistakably Australian: wind, salt, sandstone and surfers studying the waves.
We continue through Anglesea and Lorne, stopping for coastal views, local cafés and short walks. At Kennett River, keep your eyes high in the eucalyptus trees. Our guides know where to look for wild koalas, crimson rosellas and other native birds.
The afternoon takes us into the cool, green forests of Great Otway National Park. Depending on your chosen itinerary, we can include a guided rainforest walk, Cape Otway Lighthouse visit or a short section of the Great Ocean Walk. The walking trail follows the coast between Apollo Bay and the 12 Apostles, linking beaches, cliffs, headlands and forest.
We settle into Apollo Bay for the evening. This relaxed seaside town is the perfect base for your first night, with fresh local produce, ocean views and time to unwind after a full day on the road.

Day 2: Apollo Bay, the Great Ocean Walk and the 12 Apostles at sunset
After breakfast, we travel deeper into the Shipwreck Coast. The route becomes increasingly dramatic as forest gives way to open ocean, towering cliffs and wind-shaped coastal vegetation.
For walkers, we can add a selected section of the Great Ocean Walk, rather than committing to the full multi-day trail. This may include a short coastal section near Apollo Bay, a forest-to-beach walk or a guided viewpoint walk chosen for your group’s ability. We recommend comfortable walking shoes, water and a reasonable level of fitness for uneven ground and steps.
We then continue towards the iconic 12 Apostles, the limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean. These formations were created over millions of years as waves and wind carved caves, arches and pillars into the cliffs. Despite the name, the number of visible stacks has changed over time as erosion continues its work.
The timing is one of the great advantages of a multi-day tour. Rather than arriving with the busiest day-trip crowds, we aim for the softer light of late afternoon and sunset. The limestone faces shift from pale gold to warm orange, while the sea below becomes a darker, more powerful blue.
Nearby, Loch Ard Gorge adds history to the scenery. Named after the 1878 shipwreck of the Loch Ard, the gorge tells the story of passengers Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce, the two young survivors who reached shore after the disaster. Our guides bring the history to life while allowing time for photographs and quiet exploration.
We continue inland towards the Grampians region, with the exact accommodation plan adjusted according to seasonal daylight, road conditions and your preferred pace. Our Grampians base is Halls Gap, the gateway village for the mountain landscapes ahead.
Day 3: Halls Gap, Pinnacle Lookout, Mackenzie Falls and Boroka Lookout
We begin early for one of the most memorable moments of the trip: Pinnacle Lookout at sunrise.
As the first light reaches the sandstone ridges, Halls Gap and the surrounding valleys spread below you. The Pinnacle is reached by a walking trail through rocky terrain, with the route selected according to your group’s fitness and current track conditions. The effort is rewarded with one of the Grampians’ most famous panoramas.
The region is known to the Traditional Owners as Gariwerd, a place of deep cultural significance with an extraordinary concentration of Aboriginal rock art and stories. We travel respectfully through Country and can include cultural interpretation at locations such as Brambuk, the National Park and Cultural Centre, where available.
After breakfast, we visit Mackenzie Falls. Spring is an especially rewarding time to see the waterfall, as winter rain can bring stronger flows over the escarpment. Water plunges down the rocky gorge, creating spray, pools and a deep green contrast against the surrounding bushland.
We also make time for Boroka Lookout, where the view opens across Halls Gap, Lake Lonsdale and the valley beyond. In spring, the Grampians slopes can be dotted with wildflowers, while cooler mornings keep the walking conditions comfortable.

At dawn and dusk, the wildlife becomes more active. Keep watch for kangaroos grazing near open grassland, emus moving through the scrub and native birds calling from the trees. Wildlife is never guaranteed, but travelling with a local guide gives you a far better understanding of where and when to look.
We return to Halls Gap for a second evening, giving you time to enjoy a relaxed dinner rather than packing and changing accommodation every night.
Day 4: Grampians wildlife, local discoveries and return to Melbourne
Our final morning begins at an unhurried pace. Depending on your interests, we can include another short walk, a quiet wildlife lookout or a scenic drive through the ranges before beginning the return journey to Melbourne.
Spring brings longer daylight hours, fresh growth and changing weather across Victoria. Along the coast, whale sightings may be possible as migrating whales pass through the Southern Ocean, while the Grampians offer wildflowers, flowing waterfalls and crisp mountain air. We always recommend checking current conditions before departure because trails, roads and lookouts can close temporarily after storms or fire activity.
As we travel back towards Melbourne, you can reflect on how quickly the landscape has changed: from surf beaches and rainforest to limestone cliffs, open plains and rugged sandstone peaks.
This is why a Grampians tour from Melbourne works so well when paired with the Great Ocean Road: one itinerary gives you an exceptional cross-section of Victoria without asking you to plan several separate transfers.

Practical tips before you travel
Fitness: Expect short walks, stairs, uneven surfaces and exposed lookouts. The Pinnacle route can be adapted, but a moderate level of fitness will help you enjoy the itinerary.
Layers: Coastal wind and mountain mornings can feel cold, even in spring. Bring a waterproof jacket, fleece or warm layer, sun protection and a hat.
Footwear: Wear closed, comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Sandals are not suitable for the Pinnacle or rainforest trails.
Mobile coverage: Coverage can be limited in parts of the Otways and Grampians. Download important information in advance and let family know that reception may disappear between towns.
Booking ahead: School holidays, long weekends and spring weekends can fill quickly. Accommodation in Apollo Bay and Halls Gap is limited, so booking early is strongly recommended.
