Phillip Island Winter Adventure: Surf, Cliffs & the Penguin Parade Under Starlit Skies from Melbourne
Chase crisp coastal air, powerful winter surf, windswept cliffs and the famous Phillip Island penguin parade on a full-day adventure from Melbourne.
There is something wonderfully wild about Phillip Island in winter. The air feels sharper, the Bass Strait swells arrive with real force, and dramatic clouds sweep across the coastline before the sky turns violet at dusk. While summer brings long days and warm beaches, winter reveals the island at its most atmospheric: and gives you an earlier, more convenient Penguin Parade.
At Great Ocean Road Trip Melbourne, we design our adventures around the moments that make Victoria unforgettable. On this journey, we combine a morning coastal adventure, spectacular wildlife lookouts and an evening encounter with the world’s smallest penguins.

8:00 AM : Leave Melbourne for the Coast
We leave Melbourne in the morning, heading southeast through the city’s outer suburbs and across the bridge towards Phillip Island. As the urban landscape fades, the journey opens into coastal farmland, saltmarshes and wide Bass Strait horizons.
Winter is an excellent time for Melbourne winter day trips because the cooler season creates a more relaxed rhythm. You can enjoy the island’s major attractions without trying to fit every activity into a long summer day. The earlier sunset also means the penguins return to shore much sooner than they do in December or January.
We recommend bringing breakfast or enjoying a coffee stop along the way. Our guides use the drive to introduce you to Phillip Island’s wildlife, coastline and First Peoples’ connection to the region, helping you understand the landscape before we arrive.
10:00 AM : Choose Your Morning Adventure: Surf or Cape Woolamai

Option One: Winter Surf at Cape Woolamai
For experienced surfers, Cape Woolamai is one of Phillip Island’s most exciting coastal playgrounds. Winter brings colder water, bigger southern swells and powerful beach-break conditions. The golden beach looks spectacular beneath a steel-blue sky, while the surrounding cliffs give the coastline a rugged, untamed character.
Surfing here is best suited to confident participants who understand rip currents and changing ocean conditions. You should always check local warnings, use suitable winter equipment and swim or surf at a patrolled beach between the flags. If you would like to include surfing, let us know when you enquire so we can discuss the best arrangement for your group and the conditions on the day.
Option Two: The Cape Woolamai Coastal Hike
If you prefer to stay on land, we take you along the spectacular Cape Woolamai walking trails. Phillip Island’s highest point offers views over the beach, San Remo, Kilcunda and, on clear days, towards Wilsons Promontory.
The popular Pinnacles Walk covers approximately 4.4 kilometres return and takes around two hours. The trail begins along the beach before climbing towards clifftop lookouts, where wind-carved rock formations rise from the coastline below. For a longer challenge, the Cape Woolamai circuit extends to approximately 8.1 kilometres.
The tracks are well formed but exposed. Expect sand, steps, uneven surfaces and quick winter weather changes. We recommend:
- Sturdy walking shoes
- Water
- A warm fleece or insulating layer
- A windproof and waterproof jacket
- Care around cliff edges
- Checking tide conditions before walking
Cape Woolamai also has deep cultural significance. First Peoples have visited these dunes and coastal areas for thousands of years, and ancient middens containing shells, bones and charcoal remain protected reminders of that long history. We encourage you to stay on marked trails and treat these places with respect.
1:00 PM : Warm Lunch and Island Flavours
After the morning’s adventure, we pause for lunch in or around Cowes. A warm meal is particularly welcome in winter, when the sea air has sharpened your appetite.
Depending on your selected package, we can help arrange meals, stops and flexible dining options. Our private charter and group tours are especially useful for families and groups who want more control over the day’s pace, menu and activity choices.
This is also the perfect time to add a warm drink, check the evening forecast and prepare for the colder conditions after sunset.
2:30 PM : The Nobbies Boardwalk and Seal Rocks

In the afternoon, we travel across the Summerland Peninsula to The Nobbies, one of Phillip Island’s most spectacular coastal lookouts. The easy boardwalk is approximately 500 metres return and takes around 20 minutes, although we allow extra time for photographs, wildlife spotting and simply standing still to watch the ocean.
Winter transforms this headland. The Bass Strait can be loud and energetic, with waves surging around the Nobbies rock formations and exploding through the natural blowhole. The wind carries the clean scent of salt and seaweed, while shifting light creates constantly changing colours across the cliffs and water.
From the lookouts, you can see Seal Rocks, home to Australia’s largest fur seal colony. Bring binoculars if you have them. The seals are offshore, but you may spot them resting on the rocks, moving through the water or gathering near the colony.
Winter is also whale-watching season around Phillip Island. Between late May and early July, humpback and southern right whales migrate north from Antarctic waters, although sightings are never guaranteed. Keep scanning the horizon for a blow, a dark back or the flash of a tail.
Current visitor tip: Phillip Island Nature Parks advises that the Nobbies boardwalks and car park are open, while the Nobbies Centre may have temporary closures or changed facilities. Check the official Nobbies information page before travelling.
4:45 PM : Arrive at Summerland Beach

Now we make our way to Summerland Beach for the main event: the Phillip Island penguin parade.
The official Penguin Parade Visitor Centre opens daily from midday, and visitors are advised to arrive approximately one hour before the penguins’ expected arrival. In mid-August, little penguins generally come ashore at around 6:00 PM, although the exact time changes with sunset and should always be checked on the official penguin arrival calendar.
Arriving early gives you time to use the facilities, collect your tickets, choose your viewing position and settle into the atmosphere before the light disappears.
After Sunset : Watch the Famous Phillip Island Penguin Parade
Phillip Island is home to the largest Little Penguin colony in the world. Every evening, these small seabirds leave the ocean and waddle across Summerland Beach to their burrows.
At first, the beach appears empty. Then you notice movement in the surf: one penguin, then a small group, then a growing line of tiny silhouettes hurrying up the sand. They pause, call to one another and gather courage before crossing the open beach. Soon, the sound of the colony builds around you: soft chirps, excited calls and the wash of dark water behind them.
The General Viewing area provides tiered seating overlooking the beach, followed by access to boardwalks where you can watch penguins continue towards their burrows. For a closer experience, you can ask us about premium viewing options, including Penguins Plus or Underground Viewing. Underground Viewing is particularly appealing on a cold winter evening, placing you at eye level with penguins as they pass close to the viewing windows.
The Most Important Penguin Parade Rule
Photography and filming are not permitted once the penguins begin arriving. This includes phones, cameras, video and flash photography on the beach and boardwalks. The restriction protects the penguins from light and disturbance.
You can take photographs inside the visitor centre before the parade, but once the penguins appear, put your camera away. The reward is a more immersive experience: no screen, no flash and no distraction from the remarkable sight unfolding in front of you.
What to Wear for a Phillip Island Winter Day Trip
The coastal wind can feel much colder after sunset, so we suggest packing:
- Thermal or long-sleeved base layer
- Warm fleece or jumper
- Windproof and waterproof outer jacket
- Beanie and gloves
- Long pants
- Comfortable, closed walking shoes
- Small umbrella or rain shell
- Binoculars for Seal Rocks and whale watching
The Penguin Parade is an outdoor experience, so dress for standing or sitting in cold conditions. A warm layer that seemed unnecessary in Melbourne can become essential on the Summerland Beach viewing platforms.
