Great Ocean Road and Grampians Tour Package: 3, 5 or 8 Days? How to Choose the Right Multi-City Victoria Tour
Choosing between a 3-day, 5-day or 8-day Great Ocean Road and Grampians tour package depends on more than how much time you have. It depends on how you want to travel.
Do you want to see Victoria’s famous highlights efficiently? Would you rather slow down for rainforest walks, sunrise photography and local food? Or are you planning a complete multi city tour Victoria experience that combines the coast, mountains, wildlife and regional culture?
We have designed our flexible tour packages to help you experience more without the stress of planning every transfer, meal and accommodation booking yourself. Here is how each itinerary can work, who it suits and how to build your route from Melbourne.
First, understand the route
A well-planned Great Ocean Road and Grampians journey moves west from Melbourne before turning inland through Victoria’s rugged mountain country.
The route typically includes:
- Melbourne
- Torquay, Anglesea and Lorne
- Apollo Bay and the Great Otway National Park
- Port Campbell and the 12 Apostles
- Loch Ard Gorge and the Shipwreck Coast
- Warrnambool or Tower Hill
- Halls Gap and the Grampians
- The Pinnacle, waterfalls and panoramic lookouts
The famous Great Ocean Road was constructed by returned servicemen after the First World War and is often described as the world’s largest war memorial. As you travel along its winding coastal cliffs, you are following a road with both spectacular scenery and a powerful human history.
The most important planning decision is where you spend your nights. Staying near the coast allows early access to the 12 Apostles and the Great Ocean Walk. Staying in Halls Gap gives you more time for the Grampians’ trails, wildlife and dramatic sandstone lookouts.
The 3-day option: the highlights at a fast, rewarding pace
A 3-day Melbourne to Great Ocean Road multi day tour is the best choice if you have limited time but still want to combine the coast and the ranges.
Day 1: Melbourne to the Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles
Your first day follows the coast from Melbourne through Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay. You will see surf beaches, forested hills, dramatic coastal bends and the lush rainforest of the Otways.
Depending on your selected itinerary, stops may include:
- Memorial Arch
- Coastal viewpoints
- Apollo Bay
- Otways rainforest and waterfalls
- Gibson Steps
- Loch Ard Gorge
- The 12 Apostles
The afternoon arrival at the 12 Apostles is spectacular, but it is also one of the busiest times to visit. If seeing the limestone stacks in softer light and with fewer visitors is important to you, ask us whether your package can be adjusted for an early or late visit.
Day 2: Shipwreck Coast to the Grampians
The coast gradually gives way to open farmland and volcanic landscapes as we travel inland. This is a day for understanding how dramatically Victoria’s scenery changes within a few hours.
Wildlife encounters may include kangaroos, emus, koalas or native birds, particularly around Tower Hill and other protected reserves. In October, whales may still be visible along sections of the south-west coast, although sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed.
By late afternoon, we reach the Grampians and settle into the Halls Gap region.
Day 3: Grampians lookouts and return to Melbourne
A compact itinerary usually focuses on one or two signature Grampians experiences, such as MacKenzie Falls, Reeds Lookout or a shorter walk.
The Pinnacle may be possible on some 3-day itineraries, but it depends on departure times, walking conditions and the overall route. A sunrise Pinnacle hike is much easier to include when you have an extra night in Halls Gap.
Choose 3 days if you:
- Have a short Melbourne stay
- Want the 12 Apostles and Grampians highlights
- Prefer guided travel over self-driving
- Are happy with a faster touring rhythm
- Do not need a full-day Great Ocean Walk experience
A 3-day package gives you an impressive introduction, but it is a highlights tour rather than a slow exploration.

The 5-day option: the best balance for most travellers
For international visitors, we usually recommend 5 days when the wish list includes the 12 Apostles, Otways waterfalls, a meaningful coastal walk and the Pinnacle.
It gives the route breathing space without requiring a full week away from Melbourne.
Days 1–2: Melbourne, surf coast and Otways rainforest
The first two days can follow the classic coastal route at a more comfortable pace. Instead of rushing from one lookout to the next, you can spend longer in Apollo Bay, explore a rainforest trail and visit one or more waterfalls.
Early October is an especially attractive time for the Otways. Spring rain often keeps the waterfalls flowing strongly, while the forest floor is fresh, green and cool beneath the tall eucalyptus and myrtle trees.
A 5-day itinerary may also allow time for:
- A longer Apollo Bay stay
- A rainforest or waterfall walk
- Local produce and an award-winning regional cellar door
- Extra coastal viewpoints
- A shorter section of the Great Ocean Walk
Day 3: 12 Apostles at the best possible time
With an additional night on the coast, we can plan the 12 Apostles more intelligently.
For the best chance of avoiding the largest crowds:
- Stay near Port Campbell or Princetown.
- Start before the main day-tour buses arrive.
- Visit the main viewing platform first.
- Continue to Loch Ard Gorge and nearby coastal formations afterwards.
- Allow time for changing light, wind and photography.
Sunrise is particularly rewarding. The first light catches the limestone stacks while the Southern Ocean remains deep blue and dramatic. It is also a calmer way to experience this famous landscape during Victorian spring school holidays.
Days 4–5: Port Campbell to Halls Gap and the Pinnacle
We then turn inland towards the Grampians. Two nights in Halls Gap make a significant difference. You can walk at a natural pace, enjoy a sunset wildlife encounter and choose trails according to weather and fitness.
A strong 5-day route may include:
- Pinnacle lookout
- MacKenzie Falls
- Reeds Lookout or The Balconies
- Shorter bushwalks around Halls Gap
- Kangaroo spotting at dusk
The Pinnacle sunrise hike is one of the most memorable additions to this itinerary. Begin early, carry water and wear sturdy footwear. Trail conditions and access can change, so our guides check local conditions before departure.

Choose 5 days if you:
- Want the best balance of sightseeing and downtime
- Hope to include a Great Ocean Walk section
- Want a realistic chance of fitting in the Pinnacle
- Enjoy waterfalls, rainforest and wildlife
- Prefer not to spend every day in transit

The 8-day option: travel slowly and build a complete Victorian journey
An 8-day Great Ocean Road and Grampians tour package is ideal if the journey matters as much as the famous stops.
Instead of treating the coast and mountains as two quick destinations, you can build a more immersive route with several nights in each region.
Days 1–3: Great Ocean Road and the Otways
Spend the first three days travelling through the surf coast, Apollo Bay and the Otways. This gives you time for rainforest walks, waterfalls, coastal photography and local dining.
You can also consider a longer section of the Great Ocean Walk. The complete walk is a substantial multi-day experience, but even a carefully selected half-day or full-day section provides a deeper connection with the coastline than a short lookout stop.
Days 4–5: Port Campbell and the Shipwreck Coast
Stay close enough to visit the 12 Apostles at sunrise and return later for a different perspective. Add Gibson Steps, Loch Ard Gorge and other formations along the Shipwreck Coast.
The coastal cliffs here are more than scenic. They tell a story of shipwrecks, changing seas and relentless erosion. Our local guides add the history behind the views, helping you understand why this stretch is one of Australia’s most photographed landscapes.
Days 6–8: Grampians National Park
Three nights in or around Halls Gap allow you to explore beyond a single lookout.
A relaxed Grampians plan could include:
- Pinnacle sunrise
- MacKenzie Falls
- A second panoramic lookout
- Aboriginal cultural stories and rock landscapes
- Wildlife viewing at dusk
- Time for shorter walks or a slower morning

An 8-day trip can also be extended with carefully chosen Victorian experiences, such as a Yarra Valley cellar door, depending on your arrival and departure plans. Blossom season in the Yarra Valley is usually beginning to wrap up by early October, but the vineyards, gardens and fresh regional produce remain appealing.
Choose 8 days if you:
- Want a complete coast-to-mountains experience
- Enjoy hiking and landscape photography
- Need flexibility for weather and walking conditions
- Are travelling with family or a private group
- Want to combine nature, wildlife, food and adventure

Group tour or private charter?
A group tour is practical, social and generally the simplest choice for solo travellers, couples and young international visitors. You share the experience with other travellers, follow an organised itinerary and avoid the pressure of driving unfamiliar roads.
A private charter tour Melbourne experience gives you more control. It is especially valuable when your group has different walking abilities, specific accommodation preferences or a strong interest in photography and wildlife.
With a private charter, we can discuss:
- Earlier starts for the 12 Apostles
- A sunrise Pinnacle hike
- Longer or shorter walking sections
- Extra photography stops
- Family-friendly pacing
- Airport pickup and drop-off
- Private accommodation arrangements
Our packages can include accommodation, entry fees, meals and airport transfers, depending on the selected itinerary. For us, all-inclusive means you can focus on the experience rather than constantly calculating transport, tickets and meal logistics. We confirm the exact inclusions before booking so your expectations are clear.
During the famous Penguin Parade season, remember that viewing times shift later as daylight extends through spring. If you are combining the Great Ocean Road and Grampians with Phillip Island, allow enough time between regions rather than trying to force every attraction into one long day.
Our practical recommendation
Choose:
- 3 days for essential highlights and limited time
- 5 days for the best balance of coast, rainforest, walking and mountains
- 8 days for a slower, more exclusive and flexible Victorian adventure
Early October is a beautiful time to travel. Whales may still be along the coast, Otways waterfalls are often flowing strongly, spring landscapes remain fresh and the Pinnacle is magnificent at sunrise. Because it is also Victorian spring school holiday season, we recommend booking accommodation and popular departures early.
