Dandenongs, Yarra Valley & the Warburton Rail Trail: A 3-Day Multi-City Victoria Escape from Melbourne

Victoria is at its best when you slow down and explore beyond Melbourne’s city centre. In just three days, we can take you from mountain villages and historic railways to award-winning vineyards, Australian wildlife and a spectacular cycling trail through the Upper Yarra Valley.

This multi city tour Victoria itinerary is designed for international travellers who want variety without the stress of planning every transfer, booking and entry ticket themselves. Your route connects Melbourne, the Dandenong Ranges, the Yarra Valley, Lilydale and Warburton in one carefully paced regional escape.

You will travel through fern-filled forests, taste cool-climate wines, watch the sunrise from a hot-air balloon and cycle approximately 40 kilometres along a former railway line. It is an adventurous, scenic and delicious way to experience Victoria in October.

At a glance: your 3-day Victoria escape

  • Duration: 3 days and 2 nights

We can tailor the route around your accommodation preferences, fitness level, winery interests and preferred departure location.

Day 1: Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy, forest villages and sunset views

Morning: Melbourne to Belgrave and Puffing Billy Railway

We leave Melbourne in the morning and travel east towards Belgrave, the gateway to the Dandenong Ranges. The city quickly gives way to rolling hills, tall mountain ash trees and cool, green forest.

Our first major experience is the famous Puffing Billy Railway, where a historic steam train carries us through the forest in open-sided carriages. The journey is both scenic and nostalgic, with misty gullies, fern fronds and timber trestle bridges appearing beyond the windows.

Insider detail: Puffing Billy began operating in 1900 as part of Victoria’s narrow-gauge railway network. The line was built to connect remote mountain communities with the lowlands, and today its preserved locomotives offer a wonderfully atmospheric glimpse into early twentieth-century travel.

Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours for the train experience, depending on the selected route and available departure time. Train timetables change, so we recommend booking ahead, particularly during October weekends and school holidays.

Afternoon: Sherbrooke Forest, lyrebirds and mountain villages

After the railway journey, we explore the atmospheric trails of Sherbrooke Forest, part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The forest is filled with towering eucalypts, mossy trunks, lush ferns and the soft sound of water moving through the gullies.

Keep your eyes and ears open for superb lyrebirds. They are famously shy, but early or quieter periods of the day can offer the best opportunity to hear their remarkable calls echoing through the forest. We always encourage visitors to remain patient, quiet and respectful of wildlife.

We then continue to Olinda and Sassafras, two charming villages known for their gardens, tea rooms, galleries, bookshops and welcoming local cafés. This is the perfect time to enjoy a warm drink, browse regional produce or pick up a small souvenir from the hills.

Evening: SkyHigh Mount Dandenong at sunset

As the afternoon light softens, we make our way to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong. From this elevated viewpoint, Melbourne spreads across the horizon, with the skyline and Port Phillip Bay glowing beneath the changing colours of sunset.

This is one of our favourite moments of the itinerary because it provides a dramatic contrast to the morning’s enclosed forest scenery. You begin the day beneath a canopy of trees and finish above the city, looking back across the route you have travelled.

Typical Day 1 timing

  • 8:00–9:00 am: Depart Melbourne
  • Morning: Puffing Billy Railway
  • Afternoon: Sherbrooke Forest, Olinda and Sassafras
  • Late afternoon to evening: SkyHigh Mount Dandenong
  • Overnight: Dandenong Ranges or Yarra Valley

Day 2: Yarra Valley, sunrise ballooning, cellar doors and Australian wildlife

Visitors enjoying the Yarra Valley wine region

Sunrise: Hot-air ballooning over the valley

Day two begins before dawn with an unforgettable hot-air balloon flight over the Yarra Valley. As the balloon rises, the valley slowly appears below: vineyard rows, orchards, forested ridgelines and winding country roads illuminated by the first golden light.

Flights usually require an early meeting time and can take several hours when preparation, flight and post-flight breakfast are included. We recommend warm layers, closed shoes and a flexible schedule, as ballooning is weather dependent.

October is an excellent time for this experience. Days are becoming warmer and longer, while mornings in the hills can still feel crisp and quiet.

Late morning and lunch: A curated Yarra Valley wine tour

After ballooning, we continue with a carefully selected Yarra Valley wine tour through one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate wine regions.

Rather than rushing through a long list of cellar doors, we focus on a balanced selection of wineries and styles. Depending on availability and your preferences, the day may include tastings of chardonnay, pinot noir, sparkling wine and dessert wine, alongside a relaxed regional lunch.

Our wine-focused experiences can include producers such as:

  • De Bortoli
  • Yering Station
  • Payten & Jones
  • Coldstream Hills
  • Medhurst
  • Oakridge or Punt Road when alternate cellar doors are required

The Yarra Valley is particularly celebrated for elegant chardonnay and pinot noir, shaped by cool mornings, rolling elevations and diverse soils. We allow time to ask questions, enjoy the scenery and select a bottle or two to remember the journey.

Australian birdlife in a natural bushland setting

Afternoon: Healesville Sanctuary

In the afternoon, we visit Healesville Sanctuary, where you can encounter some of Australia’s most distinctive wildlife in a conservation-focused setting.

Allow around 2 to 3 hours to explore. Highlights may include:

  • Platypus
  • Koalas and kangaroos
  • Wombats
  • Emus and colourful native birds
  • Birds of prey and wildlife presentations

The sanctuary is a wonderful complement to the wine region. After a morning of vineyards and cellar doors, you enter a landscape of eucalypts and native bushland where Australia’s unique animals take centre stage.

Typical Day 2 timing

  • Before dawn: Hot-air balloon experience
  • 9:00–10:00 am: Breakfast and valley transfer
  • Late morning to mid-afternoon: Cellar doors and lunch
  • Afternoon: Healesville Sanctuary
  • Evening: Overnight in the Yarra Valley

October bookings are important. Hot-air balloon flights and popular cellar doors can fill quickly, especially on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Day 3: Warburton Rail Trail, a 40-kilometre cycling adventure

Cyclists riding through scenic Victorian countryside

Morning: Lilydale to Warburton by bicycle

On our third day, we trade the tour vehicle for bicycles and follow the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail through farmland, woodland and quiet country settlements.

The full route is approximately 40 kilometres one way, making it a rewarding full-day ride for active travellers. The trail follows a former railway corridor, so gradients are generally manageable, although you should be comfortable cycling for several hours.

Along the route, we pass:

  • Historic trestle bridges
  • Open paddocks and grazing farmland
  • Forest edges and mountain views
  • Small townships and picnic areas
  • Sections of the original railway landscape

We can also customise the ride with a shorter section, e-bike assistance or additional vehicle support. This makes the experience suitable for mixed-ability groups and travellers who want the scenery without committing to the entire distance.

Afternoon: Warburton and the Upper Yarra Valley

Arriving in Warburton, we slow the pace with time to explore the riverside township. A relaxed stop at Pedal Powered Provedore is an ideal way to refuel with local food, coffee or a well-earned treat.

Warburton has a distinctive mountain-town atmosphere: historic buildings, independent cafés, the Yarra River and forested slopes rising around the valley. It feels wonderfully different from Melbourne, despite being accessible as part of a compact multi-city itinerary.

Insider detail: Near Warburton, the Upper Yarra region is also home to the striking redwood forest at Cement Creek. The towering Californian redwoods create a cathedral-like canopy and offer a peaceful optional walk if you extend the day or choose a gentler alternative to the full cycle.

Typical Day 3 timing

  • 8:00–9:00 am: Bike fitting and departure from Lilydale
  • Morning to early afternoon: Rail Trail cycling
  • Afternoon: Arrive in Warburton and enjoy lunch
  • Late afternoon: Optional redwood forest visit or return transfer
  • Evening: Return to Melbourne or continue your Victorian journey

Spring travel tips for October

  • Pack layers: mornings in the Dandenongs and Yarra Valley can be cool, even when Melbourne feels warm.
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes and sun protection.
  • Expect longer daylight hours and fresh green landscapes.
  • Look for spring wildflowers along forest roads and regional trails.
  • Reserve hot-air balloon flights well in advance.
  • Book cellar doors and restaurant tables early.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle for the Rail Trail.
  • Keep plans flexible because balloon flights and some outdoor activities depend on weather.

Where to go next: extend your Victorian adventure

If three days leaves you wanting more, we can build a longer multi-city Victoria journey around your interests.

For dramatic coastlines, add a Great Ocean Walk experience through coastal cliffs, beaches and forest. Our longer 3-day package tours and extended regional itineraries can also connect Melbourne with the Shipwreck Coast.

A Melbourne to Great Ocean Road multi day tour is ideal if you want more time for Apollo Bay, rainforest walks and the Twelve Apostles without spending the entire day in transit. Alternatively, a classic 12 Apostles tour from Melbourne can be added before or after this eastern Victoria escape.
